How to read. Understand?

When we read, something happens. For most of us, we find ourselves at the bottom of the page without knowing what we just read! This will help you get past that. If you apply this reading technique, reading will become the most enjoyable practice in your life.

1. Eat. Drink some water. (Like always!).

2. Gather your books. Notes. Anything.

3. Open the page and look at it. You see words, don’t you? What’s the fright? “Testing is tomorrow. How the heck am I going to do well? I haven’t even started this thing!!” Do not panic. I say that with the most sincerity.

4. Those words you see are your closest friends. They are the ones who will get you through the test/exam/whatever. Now, for every sentence, those words come together to deliver a message. Example: Lizards live in the wet valleys of Africa. Explanation: The words, Lizards, live, in, the, wet, valleys, of, Africa,…just came together to tell you where lizards live. Didn’t they? For every line you read in your book, pick up on what they say, not what they look or sound like. They will always come together to tell you something. Listen to them, and you will be just fine!

5. Always remember to reread everything you study, 5-10 minutes after you study them. It’s good to over learn and be bored than to be an idiot with an F on a test. Isn’t it?

Sticking it to the Books!

There are two keys to memorizing anything. Focus and Believing!  Use this only if you are required to memorize something. If you are not, Comprehension is always the best move.

1. Drink some water. Eat something, not to make you full.

2. In a relaxed location, gather the book, script, page, etc.

3. Read the material. Reread the Material depending on how long or how complicated it is, until you get the message (s).

4. You will be memorizing lines, not words. Memorize a sentence at a time. Read up to periods, not commas. Ignore words like be, to, a, the, is, etc. Go on to words that matter, like unfamiliar or bigger words. After you have completed a sentence, read the entire sentence including the little words, twice.

5. Repeat step 4 until you feel comfortable using the technique. You can Modify it to work best for you. Remember to comment and give advice on your modification. It will help a great deal.
